“Inbox zero is a virtuous habit, though an exhausting one. Like all forms of responsiveness, it favors the short term over the long, the urgent over the important. And it comes with a juicy deniability, a way to spend an hour or two without having to own too much”
– Seth Godin “The Practice”
This is what I am more and more accustomed to do. With my nature of work, “serving clients” and addressing all those messages with “Urgent” in the title, exclamation points (marked as important in Outlook). In a way I am feeling like I am failing to prioritize, but hearing from every team member, management – “oh you should acknowledge email”< tell them of your expectant delivery – all that takes time. And it distracts from any deep work, heftier projects. Even writing and acknowledging is an attention pulled away from other things.
No deep focus is cultivated.
Also it is interesting – how overall culture is changing – we want (and clients want) faster answers, expect instant reply (even if it is “I’ve seen your message”), but at the same time – computers, AI can do that. And humans are expected to do deep work, research.
But When? If we are constantly interrupted either by emails, or outside buzz, or even our own thoughts.
